Estela Melendez is 91 years old and a recent widow. For years she had a lump on her belly that would sometimes hurt.

Doctors believed it was a tumor, until they realized it was actually a fetus that she had been carrying in her uterus for 60 years.

“The doctor said I had a tumor and that they needed to operate on me,” Melendez told CNN. One day, Melendez suffered a fall, after which X-rays revealed the calcified fetus.

Recently, another woman was believed to have a brain tumor but similarly it turned out to be the remains of a twin.

“Can you imagine? More than 60 years!” said her nephew Luis Melendez, who was baffled by the news.

“I wonder how she never felt bad once the fetus died inside of her.”

Melendez recently lost her husband of 74 years, a fisherman named Manuel Gonzalez. One of her few regrets was that she and her husband never had children.

“We suffered tremendously because of this reason,” Melendez said. However, Melendez says the lump on her belly actually reminds her of her husband and the child she dreamed of having in a very bittersweet way.

Doctors considered removing the fetus. However, because invasive surgery would be risky for the 91-year-old, they decided keeping the fetus would do less harm than removing it.

Due to her age, doctors felt it would be more harmful to remove the fetus than to leave it put. Melendez says she doesn't mind because it reminds her of her recently deceased husband, with whom she never was able to have children.
