In a recent interview, actor Eric Roberts spoke candidly about his complicated relationship with his world-famous sister, Julia Roberts.

Julia is one of the 61-year-old actor’s three sisters (including one maternal half-sister). In conversation with Vanity Fair, Eric explained the circumstances that led to the estrangement between himself and Julia, who is 11 years younger than him.

According to Eric, his longtime drug abuse was largely to blame.

“I wouldn’t characterize it as a falling out,” he explained. “I was crazy about my sisters — loved them, adored them. They were precious to me, and we had times of great closeness. We all felt very protective of each other, but the hardest person to protect yourself from is yourself.”

Eventually, the actor’s drug use alienated many of those around him. “I was exhausting to be around,” he admitted. “Complainy, blamey, unable to enjoy enjoyment. Everyone in my world needed a break sometimes, and that must have included Julia.”

But the prolific actor (who is credited with 487 film and TV appearances to date and 74 movies in 2017 alone) reconciled with his sister in 2004, when she gave birth to her twins with husband Danny Moder. Eric and his wife of 25 years, Eliza, went to the hospital just to drop off gifts and leave.

“Instead, I was ushered into their room and was immediately awash in brotherly and uncle-ly love,” he recalled. Since then, the two siblings have celebrated Thanksgivings as a family and are “e-mail buddies.”

Eric, who is much older than his more famous sister, also takes full credit for her success in Hollywood and for the success of his daughter, American Horror Story actress Emma Roberts.

“If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts and no Emma Roberts as celebrities, as actresses, and I’m very proud of that. When Julia first came to New York, I went into William Morris, and I said, ‘Which one of you is going to sign my sister Julia?'” he said. “And I am so proud that everybody knows I was first, because I was first by a long shot. I was first to get Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, so I’m proud of that.”
