This week’s final episode of Game of Thrones left fans with a lot of feelings, albeit not necessarily the ones they thought they might have.
The internet was a mixed bag of thoughts following the series finale that aired on Sunday night. Many were angry with or annoyed by the show’s ending, which (spoiler alert!) had Bran Stark leading the now six kingdoms of Westeros.
While fans processed their thoughts, they were also eager to hear what the actors thought of their characters’ fates. Emilia Clarke was naturally filled with an excess of emotions when she learned of Daenerys Targaryen’s widely panned ending.
She spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her experience reading the final episode’s script for the first time.
“What, what, what, WHAT!?” the actress recalled thinking to herself. “Because it comes out of f*cking nowhere. I’m flabbergasted. Absolutely never saw that coming.”
The scene was a lot for the actress to read through. She admits that she cried reading it and had to take some time for herself afterward.
“I walked out of the house and took my keys and phone and walked back with blisters on my feet. I didn’t come back for five hours. I’m like, ‘How am I going to do this?'” the actress revealed.
Fans had complicated feelings about seeing Daenerys die by Jon Snow‘s hand in her final scene when she was just seconds from finally taking the Iron Throne. While people weren’t exactly rooting for her after her savage takeover of King’s Landing in the penultimate episode, the whole scenario wasn’t what they pictured for her character.
In the end, Emilia feels like she can still stand by Dany.
“I thought she was going to die,” she said. “I feel very taken care of as a character in that sense. It’s a very beautiful and touching ending. Hopefully, what you’ll see in that last moment as she’s dying is: There’s the vulnerability — there’s the little girl you met in Season 1. See? She’s right there. And now, she’s not there anymore.”
