When Elvis Presley turned 18 in January of 1953, he was just getting started in his music career and had to register with the United States Selective Services, just like every other young man.
He was first drafted while he was still in high school and received a student deferment and avoided the Korean War, but as his star grew over the next few years, he never expected it would happen a second time. However, when that day came, Presley was prepared and famously said “the ARMY can do anything they want with me”. Uncle Sam couldn’t wait any longer and despite pleas from thousands of teenage girls around the world, 23-year-old Presley was inducted into the United States Army.
Presley’s time as a United States soldier in Germany is some of the most fascinating accounts of his lifetime. Not everyone is aware of Elvis’ time in the military (or any of these shocking facts!) so we’re sharing this flashback video from 1958, a news clip about Elvis’ historic induction. This little piece of history is a great reminder of how far our Nation has come… and a wonderful look back into the past.
