It’s been over 20 years since Princess Diana died. But her closest friends and family members still remember her lovingly.

Legendary singer-songwriter Elton John was famously a good friend of the late, beloved royal. In a recent interview, Elton opened up about their friendship at the time of her death and spoke about what it’s like to see her sons (who he says are very special to him, because of their mother) enjoy so many successes in their lives.

Elton appeared on the UK talk show Lorraine on January 25, 2018. The award-winning singer chatted primarily about his decision to retire from touring after 50 years on the road and why he decided to do a farewell tour.

But he also revealed his thoughts about Prince Harry’s relationship and what the red-headed royal confessed to him about Meghan before the engagement was announced.

“Well, I spent some time with [Harry] at Google Camp in Sicily last summer, and I could tell that he was totally in love,” Elton said. “He didn’t really discuss much personally, but he said ‘I’m in love,’ and I thought, good for you. […] I’m happy for him. I hope they have a wonderful [wedding] day.”

Elton also thinks Prince William seems to be doing just as well as Prince Harry. “Both those boys seem to be ecstatically happy,” he said. “And that’s all you want people to be, no matter who they are.”

The singer also revealed what had prompted his reconciliation with his “great friend,” Princess Diana, and his disbelief over her death so soon after they had made up.

Elton explained:

She was very much loved. She was a controversial figure in some respects, but not to me. I loved her because she did so much for AIDS and she was a great friend to me. We had our fallings out, but we reconciled in the end. It was an extraordinary summer. Gianni Versace was murdered [on July 15, 1997], and then Diana rang me up and we reconciled. And six weeks later, I’m in the same house, and she’s dead. It was an extraordinary and mesmerizing summer, and I just couldn’t believe what was going on. But she would be proud of her boys, and they’re doing a great job. And I’m proud of them, too.
