In the 1970s, Elton John struggled with a serious drug addiction, which he eventually beat after seeking treatment. In a 1997 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, he opened up about that struggle and admitted that another superstar helped him turn his own life around.

Elton tells Oprah: “I knew I had a problem, and the hardest thing for me was I thought I could solve everything myself.” As it turns out, it was actually Elvis Presley who convinced Elton to finally reach out and get help.

In the final months of his life, Elvis was in poor health. Elton met Elvis around this time and was shocked at the state of his friend. He told Oprah, “It was so sad, because he’d turned into this big man with no eyes, they’d sunk into the back of his head — it was pathetic.” It was the state of Elvis that reminded Elton how precious life is.

Elton says he knew Elvis “would be dead within a year if he carried on like that” — and he was right. Desperate not to turn out like Elvis, Elton decided he had to get help.

Elton stresses the importance of swallowing your pride and asking for help when you need it. After what he went through, he knows how tough that can be — but also how life-changing.

Elvis’ death is still a tragic story, but Elton’s story shows how his life, although over now, is still helping and inspiring people around the world.
