Ellen DeGeneres has gotten quite a few amazing gifts for her birthday.
The longtime talk show host turned 60 on January 26, 2018, but the festivities continued beyond that. Ellen has been celebrating her birthday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show all throughout the past week. On Friday, Justin Timberlake surprised Ellen by singing “Happy Birthday” over a video call, while Dax Shepard put together a sexy serenade for his longtime friend.
But the best gift by far came from Ellen’s wife, Portia de Rossi.
On the February 1, 2018 episode of The Ellen Show, Portia dropped by for a surprise appearance and to present Ellen with her amazing gift. The Arrested Development actress blew her wife away with the news that she was gifting Ellen a gorilla sanctuary in her name in Rwanda, building the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
Dian Fossey, a conservationist, has long been one of Ellen’s heroes. The sanctuary will be the first initiative of the The Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund, a foundation that Portia set up in Ellen’s name.
“It’s your 60th birthday, and this gift had to be really special, and it had to represent who you are and what you really care about. Not just now, but what you’ve always cared about. What you were influenced by and what has made you the amazing person that you are today.”
“So, I combined that and questions when we first met like who’s your idol, and what would you do if you weren’t a talk show host? […] Literally guys, for like the last two years, Ellen has said to me, ‘I feel like I’m not doing enough.’ Every day, almost. So, I put all that together, and I got you this gift.”
Ellen was stunned and brought to tears by Portia’s amazing gesture and how perfectly it represented what matters to her as a person. “It’s good to be loved. It’s profound to be understood,” she said, echoing Portia’s vows on their wedding day.
