Maryland bus driver Renita Smith began her evening shift like it was any other. In September 2016, she was dropping off her last batch of students, who ranged in age from four to 10, when Renita noticed her flashing brake light.

The students said they smelled smoke in the back of the bus, and by the time Renita called the transportation center, the bus had caught fire.

That’s when Renita — a single mom of two kids — tapped into her quick-thinking and maternal instincts. First, she led all 20 kids into a single-file line. Then, she safely got the students off the bus as it burst into flames in a residential neighborhood.

Then, Renita ran back into the burning vehicle and risked her own life to make sure there were no kids unaccounted for.

All 20 students were safe.

“Its my job,” she says. “They’re my babies until I give them back to you.”

Renita was hailed a hometown hero, but but when Ellen DeGeneres learned this heroic mother lived paycheck-to-paycheck, she decided this was no way for her to live and raise her kids.
