Like humans, elephants are known to build strong bonds with members of their family. In fact, their relationships can be so strong that these gentle giants grieve for their loved ones the way we do.

These incredible elephant herds will also often go above and beyond to protect each other. That especially rings true when it involves one of their calfs.

For example, we’ve seen the elephant herd that swam across a body of water in a cluster in order to keep crocodiles away from their young ones. There’s also the elephant family that stopped traffic to ensure their little one made it across the street safely.

Below, an even more incredible moment was caught on video showing two large elephants protecting a little one from a group of wild dogs.

Although the elephants were greatly outnumbered (the man recording counted 14 wild dogs), the two big pachyderms refused to back down. They made sure those persistent wild animals stayed far away from their helpless calf, even when they had to climb a tiny hill around the 1:40 mark to get away.

Eventually, the wild animals seemed to give up since those brave elephants wouldn’t give in.
