It’s not every day you see an elephant in the middle of the ocean. In fact, that startling sight was exactly what made the Sri Lankan Navy jump into action and save a life.

In the video below, posted on July 13, 2017, a large group of men from the Sri Lankan Navy approach a helpless elephant as he struggles to stay afloat in the water.

A strong current had whipped him away from shore. By the time they arrive, he appears to only be capable of trying to breathe.

Soon, the men jump into the water and swim over to the desperate animal. They are about to engage in a very bold elephant rescue in the middle of the sea.

One man swims over and manages to hop on the elephant’s back. He tries tying a white rope around the elephant, to help pull him back to shore.

The entire crew works together and pulls the poor creature closer to their boat so they can guide him home. They keep pulling and are about to reel him in slowly.

The entire elephant rescue takes around 12 hours to complete, but in the end, the safety of this beautiful elephant is all that really matters.

Check out this unbelievable elephant rescue in the video below, and please SHARE if you’re glad these men did everything they could to help this big guy return to his home.
