Elementary school crushes often lead to nothing more than playing tag together at recess. But that isn’t the case for Edward Hemmes and Christy Young, who both attended Ironia Elementary School in New Jersey in the late ’80s.
Ed admired everything about Christy even though he had no idea whether or not she reciprocated his adoration. Then Young moved away to a nearby town and the two lost touch.
But, in 2009, they unexpectedly reconnected, much like the high school sweethearts who found each other after decades.
That year, one of their former classmates shared a photo of their 1986-1987 class on Facebook and tagged several of the now grown up students in it – Ed and Christy included.
Ed commented: “Christy Young (loved her.)” Turns out, he didn’t realize Christy and everyone else tagged could see his bold statement. He quickly apologized for publicly confessing his love. Christy told him not to worry, adding that it’s “flattering to have an admirer.”
It’s a good thing he didn’t know how to work the social media site because it led to one heartwarming love story.
“I am a huge Hallmark movie fan and you can always see the setup coming before it happens so when you are out there dating you think that’s what it will look like and then life surprises you and you find what you were looking for just not how you saw the setup coming,” Christy told LittleThings.

More than 20 years after the 1986-1987 class of New Jersey's Ironia Elementary School took this photo, one of the classmates shared it on Facebook. She also tagged her former classmates in the throwback photo. Little did she know what was about to happen...
One of those tagged was Edward Hemmes, who had the biggest elementary crush on one of the girls in the photo, Christy Young. Unaware that she could see his comment, Ed wrote: "Christy Young (loved her.)" Of course she did see and that's when Ed sent her a friend request.
He followed up with a private message and the two spent a long time communicating via Facebook. Eventually, he finally asked her out on a date. After their first date, a relationship quickly blossomed.
After more than two years of dating, Ed popped the question. He chose to propose in front of their old elementary school, People reported. How romantic!
The couple said “I do” in Dec. 28, 2013.
They are now parents to a 16-month-old girl Emily Grace and still live in New Jersey.
Christy told LittleThings: “I am a huge Hallmark movie fan and you can always see the setup coming before it happens so when you are out there dating you think that’s what it will look like and then life surprises you and you find what you were looking for just not how you saw the setup coming.”
Her relationship with Ed proves how unexpected life is, especially when you’re putting yourself out there.
Please SHARE to not only spread their adorable love story, but to also encourage others to take a chance the way Ed did!
