Five-year-old Eden was just being a silly kid, playing and performing gymnastics in her living room.
But then the “little daredevil,” as her loved ones call her, did one simple backbend… before collapsing in pain. At first, her mom Kylee didn’t think it was anything too serious. But 30 minutes after she stopped crying, Eden said something strange. “I feel like my feet are sleeping,” she told Kylee. Concerned that she couldn’t feel her feet, Mom rushed Eden to the hospital.
“In one instant, that backbend altered our lives forever,” Kylee says. That’s because doctors said Eden’s “bridge” backbend hyper-extended Eden’s spine and caused a massive stroke in her spinal cord.
The little girl who dreamt of one day becoming a ballerina was now paralyzed from the waist down. She spent 52 days in the hospital and adjusting to life in a wheelchair.
But perhaps what is most surprising about Eden’s story is her resilience and determination. Just one week after leaving the hospital, Eden returned to school, and Kylee says her daughter’s positive outlook hasn’t changed one bit.
