I love getting those tiny earring studs from the mall at stores like Claire’s or Target, but I never quite understood why some had that round plastic circle connected to the earring back.
It always felt weird wearing it, but I assumed it must be there for aesthetics, or for some reason. Who was I to disagree with the designer?
As it turns out, I was just a smidgen wrong. A woman on twitter named Chelsea Smith recently tweeted out a photograph that revealed you can totally remove those plastic backs!
If you’re looking for an awesome place to store those cute little earring backs (don’t they always get lost?) check out this easy jewelry holder cork board DIY.
Although many people were excited at the news, others suggested it was there to fasten earrings that are on the heavier side.
“The plastic disk is there to provide additional support with heavy earrings, so your earlobes don’t get stretched out,” a commenter named Lisa Jones said.
Another woman said that after having her ear hole stretched, the plastic backs are the only ones that kept earrings secure.
“I had my ears pierced almost two years ago now, and I had a back go into my earlobe… I no longer wear earrings, but when I was trying to go back to normal after this, I would only use backs with the plastic.”
Either way, it’s nice to know that they’re more customizable than we had previously believed!
