Mya Monay, 19, recently got some devastating news: Simba, the Pekingese and shih tzu mix she’s owned since she was 7, was diagnosed with spondylosis.
This degenerative condition affecting the 19-year-old pooch’s spine left him in so much pain, he could no longer be cuddled by Mya.
After making the tough decision to put Simba down, Mya decided to snap a final selfie with her hairy BFF — a moment that changed everything.
Mya was filming a video with Simba on May 22, sobbing as she looked at her phone’s screen, when suddenly — as if to comfort her — Simba began wiping her tears off her face with his head.
“He has never rubbed his face onto someone else’s before,” Mya said, according to MSN. “This was such a special moment. I wasn’t expecting him to do this,” she continued. “I was just taking selfies with him to capture some memorable moments.”
The exchange was too special to ignore, so after talking with veterinarians, Mya decided to not put Simba down after all. Instead, she’ll let him pass naturally so that they can enjoy a little more time together.
“Simba and I have a connection that no one can understand, not even family,” said Mya. “We spend most days together, even though now he sleeps for most of them, [and] he still holds a special place in my heart.”
