Though celebrities can often seem untouchable with their wealth and notoriety, it’s important to remember that they’re real people at the end of the day. It’s all too easy for strangers to gang up on a famous person, forgetting that they have feelings and that they make mistakes.
Celebrity moms are subject to this all too often. Jenna Dewan Tatum frequently gets “mommy-shamed” for posting sexy photos of herself and celebrating her body. Jessica Simpson seems to get criticized nearly every time she posts photos of either of her two children.
Drew Barrymore is one of Hollywood’s longest- and hardest-working actresses, but even she isn’t immune to the cruelty of people who choose to bully others anonymously, online.
Interestingly enough, Drew’s recent online bullying wasn’t related to parenting. Rather, it was all about her apparent mistreatment of a starfish. But the mean comments left by strangers took their toll regardless, so she took to Instagram to let her followers know how she was dealing with her hurt.

Among her 7.8 million Instagram followers, Drew is known for keeping it real.
She frequently posts makeup-free selfies and less-than-flattering shots of herself, encouraging fans to embrace their inner beauty and not allow themselves to be defined by how they look.
But she’s also not afraid to share the reality of what it takes to get glam and the fact that looking your best on the outside can also make you feel good.
Drew is the founder of her own makeup and fragrance line: FLOWER Beauty.
According to the brand’s website, Drew’s mission was to provide women everywhere with “the best quality, most efficacious products at an affordable price” that are also cruelty-free.
Unfortunately, it was while showing off one of her company’s latest products in a post that the mom of two got into some trouble with her more opinionated followers.
Drew posted a short video clip of herself holding up a starfish and comparing its color to that of FLOWER’s latest lip duo.
“My favorite brand new mix and matte lip duo with one end in gloss one end in corresponding matte lip in BRONZE ENVY me and my starfish friend have glorious color in common,” the Santa Clarita Diet actress wrote. “I am so inspired! Link in bio to buy! It’s three way color. And I am in Love. Hope you like!”
Some commenters were more concerned with the well-being of the starfish in Drew’s hand than they were with her lip color.
While many fans came to Drew’s defense and told the criticizing commenters to back off, it was clear that their words had hurt Drew.
When she returned to Instagram after a several-day break, she had a brand-new look and an explanation for it.
Haters gonna hate. Yesterday I saw comments on my Instagram feed about my post that were mean, cruel, and ugly. It hurt me. And you know what women do when they get hurt???? They pick themselves up! Go get a haircut. Put on some lipstick and chant “if you don’t have something nice to say… don’t say anything at all” thank you @markishkreli @yumi_mori for picking a girl up and dusting her off. And more than anything, helping me feel pretty. Pretty is on the inside. But a little love on the outside never hurts. #thisfeedisforlovers
Drew is right about one thing: Self-care is so important.
She followed up her makeover by posting several photos from the annual “Mom Trip” that she’s currently on with her fellow mom friends.
What do you think of Drew’s message about picking yourself up when you’re down?
