Black Lab Survives Being Shot With An Arrow, Now Waiting For Forever Home

by Anna Halkidis
Anna is a native New Yorker who loves concerts, travel, good coffee, and her Jack Russell terrier, Charlie. She’s a multimedia journalist who earned her master’s degree from the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. Her true passion for telling stories keeps her inspired.

Gemma may have been through an unfortunate incident, but the 2-year-old retriever has touched many by keeping her upbeat spirit.

“Gemma is amazing. She is extremely happy,” Melissa Borden of the Devoted Barn told WXYZ. “Obviously very forgiving to go through what she went through and to have zero issues with people.”

The nonprofit animal rescue in Newport, MI, took in Gemma after her owner shot her in the head with an arrow and left her in the woods. Like the South Carolina man who was arrested for taping a dog’s mouth shut, this owner was charged with animal cruelty.

Thankfully, the arrow didn’t hit her brain or any nerves.

And, despite such tragic trauma, the dog made a great recovery, much like the 1-year-old golden retriever who was soaked with battery acid.

As she waits for her forever home, the lively pooch remains active at the Devoted Barn, which takes in animals “of all kinds from cruelty, neglect, and large scale hoarding cases.”

“She’s a hunting dog, so she’s got a brain and she needs to use it,” Borden said. “She’d be great at agility. Anything where she has to work.”
