These days, there seems to be an app for everything.
And when I heard about a new app named Bark’N’Borrow aimed at dog lovers, I knew that I had to take a closer look.
Lovingly dubbed the “Uber for dogs,” this app allows people to search for dogs to either borrow or just walk around their neighborhood.
Connecting dogs, owners, professional sitters and pet lovers alike, Bark’N’Borrow promotes “dog sharing” that benefits humans and animals alike!
Though the app is free to download and use, dog-sitters can advertise their services for a charge, allowing doggy mommies and daddies to get some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Founded in 2014 by Liam Berkeley, Bark’N’Borrow is one of the very first dog-sharing apps to take off in the U.S.
Liam recounts his inspiration behind the app: after moving to Los Angeles from Australia in 2012, he deeply wanted a dog. Unfortunately, with the reality of a full-time job and a small apartment, that dream just didn’t seem feasible.
After jumping to dog-sit at every opportunity, the idea came to him: create an app that connects folks like himself with dog owners who need a helping hand. It wasn’t much longer before Bark’N’Borrow was officially born.
The app functions on a few different levels. It allows dog owners to either find professional sitters or allow their dogs to be a per-day canine companion by other verified users.
To start, a person can just download the app for free and begin a profile for their furry friend, filling out specifics like age, gender, size, breed, training level, and whether or not the pup is good with other dogs.
Bark’N’Borrow also wants to ensure the proper care and safety of all animals involved, so they require a screening, secure payment options, and preferred veterinarian contact information. In addition, the site maintains a code of ethics they take very seriously.
And just like Yelp or Seamless, this app allows you to leave and manage reviews for the dogs!
Though Bark’N’Borrow is the first major dog-sharing app to gain popularity in the states, the U.K. and Ireland have been connecting dog owners and dog lovers through sites like BorrowMyDoggy, which began in 2012.
And let’s not forget the momentum of the 'cat cafe' — coffee shops that allow you to have a scone and enjoy a cuddle with a feline friend.
Animal-sharing is a trend that seems to be here to stay — and pet owners and lovers couldn’t be more thrilled. You can download Bark’N’Borrow through your iPhone’s app store and sign up today.
