Brave Dog Helps Save 4 Lives When He Alerts Residents As Fire ‘Completely Guts’ Their House

A 3-year-old poodle named Divi is more than man’s best friend — he’s a hero. The small, fluffy pooch is credited with saving four residents from a raging fire that destroyed a multifamily home in Marlborough, Massachusetts, early Friday morning.

The Framingham Tab reports that Divi started barking frantically just before 2:30 a.m. His yapping woke the two people sleeping on the duplex’s top floor, who then spotted the fire roaring past one of the home’s rear windows.

Assistant fire chief Fred Flynn told the newspaper that everyone in the home — four humans and two dogs total, including Divi — was able to escape the fire without injury. The house itself, however, was too severely damaged and could not be salvaged despite fire crews’ best efforts to get the flames under control.

“It quickly overwhelmed,” explained Fred.

In fact, the blaze was so intense that neighboring homes had to be evacuated; some nearby residents even had their doors kicked in by firefighters.

“We thought it was our house [that was on fire] at first because the door was knocked down and you could smell smoke coming in through the hallway,” Jim Heafey, a neighbor, told Boston 25.

“It was pretty scary,” added Edgar Vigil, who also lives nearby.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but thanks to little Divi, everyone involved is safe and sound. Good boy, Divi!
