A homeless dog named Star delivered a litter of puppies inside a wooden box. It was the middle of summer, and the canine family had no food or water.
Though Star gave birth to 13 puppies, only nine survived. The exhausted mama was extremely dehydrated and malnourished. However, she’d taken incredible care of her puppies. While she suffered, she made sure her babies were as happy and healthy as they could be, given the circumstances.
By the time Star was rescued and transported to Murphy Animal Hospital in Missouri, she was having seizures and in advanced kidney failure.
Within a few weeks, Star was in great shape, and her puppies were adopted to loving families in the area.
Not only that, but Star was adopted by Shannon Flegle, DVM, owner of the animal hospital that saved her life.
Then one day, Star began throwing up and refusing food. She was experiencing kidney failure once again. Shannon tried everything she could to restore Star’s health, but nothing worked. She eventually tracked down a surgeon willing to perform an organ transplant — a rare and risky procedure for dogs — but on one condition.
She’d need to find a familial match for Star’s kidney first.
