Unlike humans, our pets don’t often undergo ultrasounds. For animals like dogs or cats, we expect multiple babies to be born, but we’re never really sure how many are truly on the way.

When the owner of a dog named Kita, a Central Asian shepherd, noticed that her pregnant belly was larger than it should have been, he assumed her litter would be bigger than normal.

But he had no idea just how big!

Kita got so large that she had to undergo a C-section to give birth. Even her vet was surprised by all the puppies she had been carrying: They just kept on coming until a total of 17 were born!

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of very large litters: Check out this story of one mama dog who gave birth to 19 puppies. That’s a lot of little ones to care for!

Kita reportedly comes from a very large litter herself. Her mom gave birth to many puppies at once. Kita may have inherited the ability to carry so many puppies in one pregnancy.

Now, all the adorable puppies are healthy and bonding with their mom. Who could have known that so many puppies were hiding in her belly? We would never have guessed!
