“Last week I almost killed my daughter.” In 2013, Jennifer Meers started a blog post with this terrifying confession.
It happened when she put her 4-year-old daughter, Ruby, in the bathtub. She heard the sound of an incoming message on her iPad, went to check it — and when she returned to the bathroom, Jennifer saw Ruby slumped over in the tub.
“I screamed,” she wrote. “I slapped her face. She didn’t wake up. But she seemed to be breathing and was otherwise all right, just asleep.” Thankfully, Ruby was only sleeping, but it haunted her to think about what could have happened.
Pregnant with her second child at the time, Jennifer took the frightening incident as a wake-up call. She could have kept it a secret, but instead she bravely shared her story with the world as a powerful warning to parents everywhere. And it worked — her story went massively viral.
Parents all over the world identified with Jennifer’s message, and the struggle against multi-tasking in a world where everyone is so connected to their technology. “Becoming a parent during the rapid rise of the era of tablets and smartphones, I have lost the ability to be present and do one thing at a time. It scares me,” she wrote. “And on this night, my inability to focus could have cost me everything.”
