Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore were a force to be reckoned with in their heyday. Side by side, the two Hollywood legends were unstoppable — and totally beloved.

Sadly, Mary passed away in 2017. But in a 2016 appearance on Oprah: Where Are They Now?Dick opened up about his relationship with his legendary co-star.

Dick and Mary Tyler Moore worked together on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Despite their age difference, they were a perfect onscreen husband-and-wife team. In fact, as Dick confirms in the video below, that’s because they loved each other in real life.

In the video below, Dick admits that he originally worried Mary was a little too young when he first met her — but he couldn’t deny that she was “just beautiful.” He also remembers thinking her iconic mid-Atlantic accent was “strange,” but it only took a few episodes for him to realize they worked perfectly together.

The Dick Van Dyke Show ran for five years, and Dick insists they were “the happiest five years in all of our lives.” He says that he and his team were happy to be together every day — and that he would “still be doing it, if they let me.”

Dick also admits that he and Mary had “like a teenage crush on each other,” which helped them work together so well. When Mary died in 2017, Dick spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his late friend, saying “just to watch her grow was such a thrill for me. She left an imprint on television comedy.”
