If it weren’t for an eagle-eyed detective, Jennifer Larson might not be around to see her baby be born.

You see, Jennifer was driving over a bridge one night and noticed her vehicle was having some trouble.

“My car was kind of chugging and lagging behind,” she recalled.

Little did she know that things were worse than just a little car trouble.

Suddenly, she saw that familiar pair of red and blue lights behind her.

“I look in my rearview mirror and there is an undercover police officer behind me with his lights on,” she said. “Great, now I’m getting pulled over.”

Jennifer thought he was pulling her over for holding up traffic, but Detective Guershon Cherilien was actually trying to save her life.

“A significant amount of fire was in the undercarriage,” he said. “She didn’t realize it.”

“He comes running up to the window and says, ‘Your car’s on fire! Get out!'” Jennifer recalled.

At six months pregnant, she quickly burst into tears and ran out of the car.

Detective Cherilien stayed and kept Jennifer calm until the fire department arrived.

“I don’t know if I would’ve been trapped in that car,” she said. “I try not to think about it, because thinking about it is very overwhelming.”

And even though the detective stayed with Jennifer until her family picked her up, she never got the chance to truly thank him, until very recently.
