An 8-year-old girl is back home with her family after a scary adventure. If not for a thoughtful gas station manager, Destinee Wilson’s story might not have had a happy ending.

According to WJBK in Detroit, Destinee Wilson was on her way to school on a Wednesday morning when she fell asleep on the school bus. She thought she was going to end up at school.

Instead, she woke up somewhere completely different. “It’s like in this parking lot and [there were] many buses and I was the only one in there and the bus person. She was pulling off,” Destinee recalled to WJBK.

According to WJBK, bus drivers are supposed to do a walk-through after dropping kids off at school. Destinee’s bus driver did not.

Frightened and alone, Destinee walked over to a nearby gas station. Inside, manager Nasser Ahmed saw her enter, cold and crying. “The first thing I thought was, is somebody trying to grab her or something,” he said. “I did not know she was left behind on the bus.”

Nasser offered Destinee snacks as she warmed up inside. Together they called Destinee’s mom, Salonia, who was completely in shock. “As far as I know, my daughter is safe at school until I go on break at 11 and I have 11 missed phone calls,” Salonia recalled.

In the end, a longtime customer of the gas station found out what was going on and offered to drive Destinee to school.

Thankfully, Destinee got to school safely, and is back with her family.
