You all know that you’ve got to eat your veggies, but with some plants, you need to be more careful than you probably realize. It turns out some popular healthy choices — a few of which you likely have in your house right now — can actually be lethal!
You would probably assume that tomatoes are perfectly safe, and you’d be right. However, the vines and leaves that hold bunches together can actually be poisonous. The go-to topping for salads and burgers actually belongs to the nightshade family, and if you decide to get cute and use green bits of the plant as a garnish, make sure everyone knows not to eat them!
Potatoes are one of the most popular foods in the world (we’re looking at you, french fries). Thing is, though, if they’re not eaten promptly, they’ll begin to sprout. You’ve probably seen this in middle school science class, or in the back of that pantry you don’t check often enough. If that happens, don’t cook them, because they’ve started producing poison.
Yucca is a regularly used potato substitute in some parts of the world and is gaining popularity in western recipes. But make sure you do your homework before trying to prepare it: Uncooked, the veggie contains a small amount of cyanide.
