David Winkelspecht was preparing to sell all of his belongings. He planned to use the money to travel from Las Vegas to San Diego to meet his son and grandchildren — for the first time ever.

At 17, Winkelspecht joined the military and wasn’t able to take care of his newborn son, also named David. By the time he returned home from serving, the young father and veteran lost track of his family.

Time and distance got the best of Winkelspecht, who was down on his luck for decades to come. The lack of connection with his son created a void he could never fill.

One day, a friend tracked down Winkelspecht’s son on Facebook, thus beginning a tireless effort to gather the funds needed to meet him.

In the incredible clip below, the Fox5 Surprise Squad offers Winkelspecht money to help make his trip possible. “There is a God!” he exclaims. Crying tears of joy, he calls his son to tell him the exciting news.

But there’s one more huge surprise planned for Winkelspecht, and he never sees it coming.

Just wait for the heartwarming reunion 28 years in the making, at the four-minute mark.
