Brad Russell received no warning from the fire detectors in his home. It was only him, his wife, and his six sleeping kids, as his house went up in flames.
“All I heard was that bloodcurdling scream,” Brad said, recalling the moment his life turned upside down. The scream had come from his 13-year-old son. When Brad found him, the room was up in flames.
The rest of his family continued sleeping. The dog was inside his crate. Brad knew he had to act quickly. One by one, he grabbed his family and took them outside.
He then realized his 6-year-old daughter was asleep in her room, where most of the flames seemed to be concentrated.
When Brad reached her, the flames surrounded them so forcefully that he was faced with no other choice but to throw himself through the window with her, his back turned to the glass. Brad suffered serious burns in the process. After his daughter was safe, he ran right back into the house one more time — to free their dog.
Even though they lost everything in the blaze, Brad remains grateful.
“We are still alive,” he exhaled. “I am not a hero; I am their dad.”
