A Little Dachshund Turns A Dolphin-Watching Trip Into An Interactive Experience

by Grace Eire
Grace plays in a band and is the mother to a black cat named Fitzhugh.

There are two types of people in the world: those who like to stay on the safety of the sandy shore, and those who like to swim way out into the deep blue sea.

Which type of person are you? Would you prefer to scuba dive with the manta rays off the coast of a tropical island, or would you rather watch their majesty through a thick pane of glass in an aquarium? If you were on a small boat on a river where freshwater dolphins go to feed, would you be in constant fear of your vessel being tipped over, or would you have to fight the urge to jump right in with them?

Me? You can’t get me any further than knee-deep before my imagination runs wild.

I was once convinced to swim all the way across the Hudson River, and was reduced to tears of pure relief when I made it safely to the other side without being devoured by some river monster. Needless to say, I should be kept far, far away from water at all times.

Gracie the dachshund pup and I share a name, but we absolutely do not share an opinion of what to do in any of these situations. She sits at the bow of her mom’s kayak while a harmless dolphin feeds. When one comes up for a breath of air? Gracie goes for it!

Note: Her mom is so surprised that she lets out a bit of sailor talk. But don’t fear for Gracie, as she shortly swims back safe and sound.
