The classic dish also tastes great with little flavorful additions like raisins and caraway seeds. The secret to getting a lightly textured, moist, and tender finished product is by using Crisco All-Vegetable Shortening. It is a great alternative to butter!

- 5 cups all-purpose flour
1⁄2cup Crisco All-Vegetable Shortening
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 3 Tbsps. caraway seeds
- 2 large eggs
- Preheat oven to 350 ºF.
- Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl. Add Crisco All-Vegetable Shortening.
- Stir in raisins and caraway seeds.
- Whisk buttermilk and eggs in a medium bowl. Add to flour mixture. Using a wooden spoon, stir until dough is sticky.
- Transfer dough to prepared skillet or pan. Using a small sharp knife dipped in flour, cut a 1-inch deep "X" in the center of the dough.
- Bake one hour and 20 minutes, or until tester inserted into center comes out clean.
- Cool for 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
