Being with the same person for 50 years certainly comes with its fair shares of ups and downs. It goes without saying that in order to be with someone so long, you have to truly love them.

Beyond love, every couple has its own unique formula for a successful marriage.

In this special Valentine’s Day episode of Truth Bomb Mom, Kristina Kuzmic sat down with two couples who have been married for five decades. From how they met to what they love about one another, Kristina learned everything there is to know about these happy couples — and even got some marriage advice along the way.

“Be a good listener, and be willing to compromise,” said Susan, who’s been with her husband, Steve, since meeting him in the sixth grade.

Lovebirds Bill and Bonnie added that marriage is about braving the ups and downs and making it to the other side. “Even at the worst of it, we never wrote the other person off,” Bill said.

After 50 years, both couples said they still find ways to surprise each other and keep their relationship alive with special moments.

“One night, for dinner [during a nice vacation,] Steve went down and got a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken, and we opened a bottle of champagne,” said Susan. “And now we reenact that!”
