In March 2014, Brian and Starla Sullivan of Renton, Washington, were tired of wasting so much money on renting an apartment. The commute was stressful, they felt no sense of community, and they were frustrated not to be homeowners. Now, their unconventional way of life simply works for them.
In April 2014, the couple spent $2,800 on an old school bus, named her “Big Bertha” and moved in the following March — with an 18-month-old infant and week-old newborn.
With no previous experience in home building, Brian and Starla spent every waking moment converting their bus into a dream home for their growing family. “We laughed, we yelled, we spent our first year of marriage building our dream home together with our bare hands… And we are still married,” Starla jokes.
And the Sullivan family keeps on growing. With 3-month-old Lincoln, the bus comfortably houses their family of five!
“I know a lot of people say that it’s not possible for us to raise kids in this bus, especially until they turn 18… but I disagree,” Starla told Barcroft. Big Bertha is outfitted with a fully functioning kitchen, propane fireplace, washing machine, room for the kids to grow and learn… and wait until you see how their bathroom works!
