A group of constructions workers in Anamosa, Iowa, recently gave themselves quite the surprise when doing some yard work on a customer’s site.

When digging through a high pile of logs, trees, brush, and sticks that had been accumulating over the years, the construction workers encountered a critter right in the middle of it: a fat raccoon.

According to ViralHog, the workers’ customer initially asked that they burn the large pile of debris. Good thing the men decided against it!

Intending to recycle the pile for wood chips, the men pulled apart the wood to find that little fat raccoon stuck in the middle.

One of the workers explained the scene: “When we got to the very bottom of the pile, I was able to see the trapped raccoon and gently remove the other trees and brush from around it.”

In the video below, you can see the workers very gently pulling bark and sticks away as the raccoon remains stuck at the waist.

Using shovels, the workers slowly dig around the animal without hurting him. The raccoon‘s little claws occasionally try to grasp at the shovels as they near him, but he seems grateful for the men helping him!

Soon, they move away enough of the pile so that the raccoon can wiggle away and run to freedom.

Luckily, one of the workers confirms that no other animals were found in the pile and that the raccoon ran away safely.
