Delivering a baby is difficult enough under normal circumstances. But sometimes, things don’t go as planned — babies have their own timetables!

Matthew Ridenhour of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, delivered his own baby in his driveway at 1:30 in the morning. He was packing the car to bring his wife to the hospital when he realized his baby boy just wasn’t going to wait.

“In our human spirit, I think there’s a way to overcome situations like this and kind of focus on what’s important,” said the quick-thinking and levelheaded dad. And what was important in that moment was their baby boy.

His wife Abby knew everything was fine once she heard the baby making noises and felt him moving around. The local EMS arrived shortly after baby Hodson was born, delivering the new family safely to the hospital.

Ridenhour, a Marine who’s been deployed twice in Afghanistan, believes his military experience helped him stay calm in the moment.

“When he gets a little older and I ask him to go sweep the driveway and he’s like, ‘No. I don’t want to go sweep the driveway,’ I’ll say, ‘Listen son, I delivered you on that driveway, the least you can do is go sweep it off,” the proud dad joked.
