Cheerful Couple Spends 5 Weeks Setting Up Christmas Lights To Raise Money For Children’s Hospice

by Olivia Jakiel

For the past 20 years, Karen and Frank Williams have been outfitting their entire property with thousands of Christmas lights and countless decorations every year — and for a very good cause.

For the past 12 years, Karen and Frank have been raising money for the Claire House Children’s Hospice and have raised over £20,000, or about $25,000. “We’ve been doing the lights for the past 20 years and we’ll be doing it until we have our last breath,” Karen told StoryTrender. “Myself and Frank started putting our Christmas decorations up at the end of October, and just finished recently.”

They even convinced the rest of their street to join in on the festive holiday cheer AND helped their neighbors put up lights. “We did the big Christmas light switch on last Friday (November 30), where everyone in the street turned theirs on in unison,” Karen gushed. “I love Christmas, but mainly it’s about seeing the enjoyment on the children’s faces when they see the lights.”

The couple doesn’t just decorate their house, though. They also keep a mailbox where kids can “send” their letters to Santa — and the kids always get a reply back. “We keep a post box outside of our house, and children can post their letters to Santa in there,” Karen said. “Then every night, I take all of the letters and write letters from Santa back to send to the children. I usually get through 350 letters a month.”

Her husband, Frank, also dons his Santa suit and hangs out in the sleigh they have outside.

All of this helps us raise even more money for charity and doesn’t take much time or money,” Karen stated. “In fact, our electric bill only goes up by £60 [$76] for the entire month we have them up!”
