Every year, the Christmas carols we all know come back around, stirring up memories of holidays past. Maybe you have a favorite song, one that you remember from childhood. Maybe you sang it with your family or with a school or church chorus, and hearing it still brings back those warm feelings of the season.

There’s something mythical about these songs. Everyone, from tiny babies to entire shopping malls, seems to know the words, but no one really remembers learning the words. You might not even remember the first time you heard a Christmas classic. It’s like it’s just always existed.

But of course, that’s not true. Behind every beloved Christmas carol there’s someone who wrote it, and a story of the historical environment that inspired it. And some of them are not at all what you might expect!

Check out the video below to see the real origins of the Christmas carols you know and love so well. It will give new dimension to the songs you grew up hearing, and might make you love them all the more.
