Christina Anstead and Tarek El Moussa started filming the HGTV show Flip or Flop back in 2013. It became a quick hit, and fans loved seeing Christina and Tarek together.
But then things took a turn.
In 2016, the couple announced that they were planning to divorce. That not only put their family in jeopardy, as Christina and Tarek share two children, Taylor and Brayden. It also made fans wonder if they’d be ending Flip or Flop. That, or be replaced by other real estate agents.
They decided to try to make their show work. It couldn’t have been easy at first. But some fans actually admitted to liking the series even better.
The divorce was finalized in 2018, but the two are still on track to premiere yet another Flip or Flop season — the third since their separation was announced.
“We’re picking up the pieces and we’ll still work together to support our kids,” Tarek shared on an episode of the show, per People.
The couple were careful to wait a little bit before publicly speaking out about the complications on set. They discussed dealing with tensions during filming with People in July 2018. Christina, who originally started the show as Christina El Moussa, got remarried in December 2018 to Ant Anstead, an English television presenter.
Christina and Ant already have a child together, as well, putting Christina’s count at three. Hudson London Anstead was born in September 2019, so things had progressed quickly in Christina and Ant’s relationship. They reportedly started dating in 2017, before her divorce was finalized.
Even their wedding was a complete surprise. Friends of Christina and Ant thought they were attending a holiday boat parade. Instead, they witnessed the couple say “I do.” The two were initially introduced by a mutual friend who figured they’d hit it off, especially since they have similar careers.
Ant isn’t jealous of the fact that Christina is still doing the show with Tarek. In fact, her professionalism over the situation is just one of the many reasons he fell for her. “What truly inspiring professionals they both are! Hats off to them,” he said to a fan on Instagram who asked about their situation.
Based on some of the stories that came out after Christina and Tarek’s announcement, it’s really good to hear that they’re in a healthier place. In 2016, they had to address the press after police visited their home due to an altercation. “We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution,” their statement said.
The police reportedly responded to a “possible suicidal male with a gun,” which is a horrifying situation, especially with children at home. Christina had told police that Tarek “took a handgun, put it in his backpack and ran outside.” Luckily, Tarek complied with the police and was safely brought back home.
Tarek agreed to relinquish his weapons for about a month, and the two worked out their differences. A source close to them told People that they weren’t quite compatible. The popularity of the show made their differences even more noticeable. “He just couldn’t or didn’t want to keep up,” the source stated.
Their interview in 2018 was much more stable. Christina admitted that their kids helped make things easier. The two still fought on occasion but seemed to be OK with life moving forward. And they likely knew that their divorce would only make things more interesting for the show. Not too many television series have a divorced couple serving as hosts.
This upcoming season will be the ninth for the show and the third since the divorce was first mentioned. “We’ve worked together for 12 years now,” Christina noted. “We just really focus on the job at hand, and if we do talk, it’s about the kids.” It’s a mature way of moving forward, and surely their two children are a lot happier now that their parents are handling their split in a healthier way.
Christina isn’t the only one in a different relationship. Even though Tarek had initially stated that he’d be single for some time, he’s been spotted with a real estate agent named Heather Rae Young. Heather also knows what life is like in front of cameras, as she was featured on the Netflix show Selling Sunset. As you can see, she’s fitting in well with the family.
Christina has another show on HGTV as well. It’s called Christina on the Coast, and back in August, it was renewed for a second season. While the release date hasn’t been set, it’s been rumored that the new season will start some time at the beginning of 2020.
If you haven’t watched it, the answer is yes — Ant appears on the show. The show is technically a Flip or Flop spin-off, and it first focused on the renovations that Christina made after her divorce. It must be tough having these personal events become so public, but when you live life in front of the camera, it’s probably second nature.
The new series is what made many fans feel like Flip or Flop was coming to an end. But luckily, Christina is able to balance both series. Tarek spoke to the New York Post before the end of season eight and noted that he’d be OK with yet another season of the show. “At the end of the day we have one shot at this thing, so let’s try to be happy and positive and focus on tomorrow instead of yesterday,” he said, per Yahoo.
If Christina and Tarek can navigate through such a messy situation, there’s hope out there for everyone. Their optimism and professionalism is a good reminder that life goes on. Romantic relationships may end, but your significant other may still end up having a big impact on your life.
