Every dog deserves a loving and happy home.
Unfortunately, for every dog safely cozied up in a forever home there are many dogs still looking for a place to call their own.
This is especially true in corners of the world where there are simply too many dogs, or where dogs are seen not as pets, but as delicacies.
Dog-meat farms have earned worldwide revulsion raising dogs to be slaughtered for meat, and animal-rights groups do their best to save as many as they can, as we saw with this sweet, fluffy golden girl who was finally rescued after too much time trapped on a meat farm.
Unfortunately, some dogs aren’t in very good shape by the time the rescuers arrive to bring them home.
That was the case for Chi Chi, a sweet and loving golden-retriever mix who survived her time on the dog-meat farm, but lost all four legs in the process.
Scroll through below to learn more about Chi Chi’s incredible story of overcoming a heartbreaking start in life.
It’s hard to know exactly what Chi Chi’s early life looked like.
What we do know is that, whether she was bred to it or brought in from elsewhere, Chi Chi ended up at a dog-meat farm.
There, she faced unthinkable torture.
She was hung upside down by her paws, which her abusers thought would make her meat more flavorful.
Instead, it cut off circulation to her paws and began to cause them horrible damage.
Eventually, they began to rot away, and the farmers put Chi Chi in a garbage bag and threw her out after deciding she wasn’t suitable for food.
Thankfully, that’s where Chi Chi’s story takes an incredible turn for the better.
A dog-rescue organization called Dogs in the Dark found her just in time and brought her to a sanctuary.
There, they were forced to immediately amputate all four of her damaged paws to keep infection from spreading to the rest of her body.
Fortunately, Chi Chi’s surgery was successful, and she got healthy quickly, showing her charming and loving personality despite everything she had been through.
She was quickly put on a flight to California via ARME (Animal Rescue, Media, and Education).
There, she was met by volunteers and got to feel grass for the very first time.
Chi Chi’s story touched the hearts of thousands, and she quickly found herself swept up into a happy forever home in Arizona.
Her forever family, the Howells, already had three rescue dogs and weren’t planning on a fourth, but when they saw that adorable face they just couldn’t resist.
They quickly began fund-raising a Chi Chi wish list to make their lives more accessible for their new pooch and her different abilities.
Best of all, the Howells decided that, if they could, they wanted to give Chi Chi something that she lost long ago: her legs.
She would never have the exact same abilities as a dog with four functional legs, but with special prosthetics, they knew that Chi Chi would be able to run and play for possibly the first time in her life.
They spoke to a specialty prosthetist and raised $3,000 to help Chi Chi have the life she deserves.
According to the Howells, she’s still getting the hang of her new prosthetics, but she already has more mobility than ever before.
They tell Caters: “Chi Chi is very playful. She is always getting the toys out and loves to be out and about, so they have given her so much more freedom.”
As for Chi Chi’s future?
“Our next step with Chi Chi is to get her certified to be a therapy dog,” the Howells said. “She is great with people and has a really positive impact on everyone she meets.”
