When Girl Is Born With Rare Defect, Doctors Tell Mom They’ve Never Seen A Face Like Hers Before

In 1996, Cassidy Hooper was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. Doctors were shocked to see Cassidy didn’t have a nose or her eyes.

They couldn’t figure out what exactly caused her rare birth defect — all they knew was that they’d never seen anything like her before.

Despite her lack of eyes or a nose, Cassidy was otherwise a healthy and normal girl. She grew up attending a special school for the blind, and, like many people who are different, she faced bullying from her peers. However, Cassidy was always known by her loved ones for her exceptionally positive outlook.

In fact, her life-motto is, “Things always may be hard, but I don’t need easy.

I just need possible.”

When Cassidy was 11 years old, she decided that she wanted a nose. It was a highly expensive endeavor. But Cassidy’s parents, Susan and J. Aaron, couldn’t say no. They explained:

“This is Cassidy’s choice. It’s what she wants. We think she’s perfect the way she is. But if she wants to get a nose, her father and I don’t want to say ‘No, you can’t have one.'”

First, doctors carved a space for the nose to sit, and by the time Cassidy was a senior in high school senior, she had undergone three surgeries to construct her new nose. Doctors drew skin from her forehead and bone from her rib.

She couldn’t wait to have the ability to breathe and smell through her nose. Doctors will also add prosthetic eyes and surgically reposition her eye sockets closer together.

At the age of 11, Cassidy asked her parents for a nose. Though the surgeries would be extensive and expensive, they wanted their daughter to be happy.
