When a young male kangaroo tumbled into a canal, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors had their work cut out for them.

There was no escape in sight for the poor animal, and the rescuers were racing against the clock. With the rising tide, the barnacles on the rocks could’ve seriously injured him.

In the clip below, you can see footage of the dramatic rescue. The rescuers get into a kayak to reach the kangaroo, who is clearly exhausted from swimming.

He manages to make them chase him for a while before he gets too tired. When they get close enough, the kangaroo rests his paws on the kayak while the men come up with a plan to safely get the animal out of the water and onto dry land.

The rescuers decide to sedate him before gently carrying him to safety. On land, they disinfect his feet and wait for him to wake up.

When the animal finally comes to, he looks a little confused and unstable. But he quickly regains his balance and mobility and hops away, back home where he belongs.

What a daring water rescue! This kangaroo is lucky there were experienced and trained individuals out there able to give him a second chance at life.
