Dining and dashing has become something of an unfortunate trend. When someone eats at a restaurant and sneaks out before paying the bill, sometimes it’s the server has to sacrifice part of his or her own pay to make up the difference.

One woman recently met one of today’s most notorious dine-and-dashers without even knowing it. She connected with a man on a dating site who goes by the name of Paul Gonzales. The pair met at Smitty’s Grill in Pasadena, California. Paul was charming and good-looking, and not at all shy when it came to ordering food and drinks. The server brought him shrimp, filet mignon and several cups of coffee, among other items.

Midway through the meal, Paul mentioned his aunt was sick and said he needed to go out to his car to grab his phone charger in case she called. “Oh what, you’re not coming back?” his date joked.

But 10 minutes later, Paul still hadn’t returned to the restaurant — and his horrified date was left with the $130 dinner bill.

She was about to discover the true identity of the man she thought she was forming a connection with… and that this wasn’t the first time he’d conned a woman looking for romance.
