When Bonnie the baby cow was 4 months old, she heard the cries of her family as they were rounded up and sold to a slaughterhouse in Holland, New York.

The terrified but strong-minded calf was able to find an opportunity to escape. She ran off and disappeared into the woods, leaving her family behind.

The community quickly learned of Bonnie’s escape, but no one was able to capture her. Animal experts doubted the domesticated farm animal, who was now totally frightened of humans, would survive the cold winter alone in the wild.

Weeks later, however, it was discovered that Bonnie was indeed alive and well — and she wasn’t alone at all.

A group of hunters had set up cameras in the woods. One day, they spotted Bonnie surrounded by a herd of four-legged creatures.

Only this family was a completely different species… and they’d taken in the orphaned calf as if she was one of them.
