Bullying Victim Says She’s Singing Simon’s Favorite Song, Then Her Voice Leaves Him Speechless

Megan is a writer from North Carolina who loves sports, sees way too many Broadway shows, and loves a good adventure! When she's not writing, you can find her curled up in bed with a Jane Austen book.

Caitlyn VanBeck has always had a powerful voice. But growing up, she didn’t feel like it was so special.

Caitlyn says she was bullied as a kid and went home crying nearly every day. She almost stopped singing because of it, but after this performance on The X Factor, there’s no way anyone will let her now.

As Caitlyn walks on stage, Simon asks her what she’s going to sing. Her reply is Andra Day’s “Rise Up,” and of course, Simon has something to say about it.

“People may not know this song, but it’s actually one of my favorite ever songs,” he says.

“No pressure,” Caitlyn replies. And with a “good luck, sweetheart” from Simon, it’s Caitlyn’s turn to shine.

She starts the song off in a low key, but her range still comes through. It’s clear that she knows her voice and exactly how to use it.

Her harmonies are gorgeous and flow effortlessly. And then when she hits the high notes of the chorus, every single member of the audience is on their feet giving her a standing ovation before she even finishes the song.

If the audience’s reaction is any sign, Caitlyn didn’t need to worry about making it to the next round of the show at all.

Caitlyn was recently cut from the show, but with her voice, there’s no doubt that she’ll be making music some day.
