In 1985, actress and model Brigitte Nielsen married movie star Sylvester Stallone.

Their marriage lasted just 19 months, ending in a divorce in July 1987.

The divorce was, in Brigitte’s own words, “ugly.” In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she opened up about her divorce and its surprising ripple effect on the rest of her life.

Brigitte claims Sylvester “begged” her to marry him, despite the brevity of their relationship. She thought it was too early, but agreed to the marriage nonetheless. Although people on the outside were convinced that she had married him because of money, Brigitte said that those claims are untrue.

It wasn’t long before the marriage fell apart — and so did Brigitte’s life.

Brigitte said: “If I would go back in time, I shouldn’t have married him. And he shouldn’t have married me.”

Brigitte also says that the end of her marriage to Sylvester meant the end of her successful career in the United States. She said that “all doors closed on me, no one wanted to touch me, and I was basically blacklisted” when she decided to leave the Rocky star.

Brigitte managed to get back on her feet after the divorce, and nearly 30 years later she’s doing just as great as ever.
