Luke Perry’s death rocked all of Hollywood earlier this year. He was an unusually kind, humble actor, and he had a memorable effect on many others in the industry, including two fellow heartthrobs: Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Brad and Leonardo worked with Luke in a new film, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie was Luke’s final role before he died from a stroke in March. He was 52 years old.

Brad and Leonardo told Esquire that working with Luke was a big moment for them. He’d been a childhood idol for them back when they were young actors.

“I remember my friend Vinny, who is in the film as well, we walked in and we both had this butterfly moment of like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Luke Perry over there!'” Leonardo recalled.

“We were like kids in the candy shop because I remember going to the studios and Beverly Hills, 90210 was going on and he was that icon of coolness for us as teenagers,” Brad said. “It was this strange burst of excitement that I had, to be able to act with him.”

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood comes out on July 26, and the first trailer just dropped this week. Luke plays Scott Lancer, a fictitious actor.

“Man, he was so incredibly humble and amazing and absolutely committed. He couldn’t have been a more friendly, wonderful guy to spend time with,” Brad said. “It was really special.”
