A 2-alarm fire broke out recently in an Oklahoma City apartment building. The blaze destroyed one family’s home, but thanks to their quick-thinking son, that entire family escaped with their lives.

Steffanie Sitton told reporters that her son James, who has autism, was the only member of the family still awake when the fire broke out.

Typically, the young boy does not do well under intense situations. But this time, James knew exactly what to do.

“All of the sudden James bursts into our bedroom: ‘Mom! Dad! The apartment’s on fire! The kitchen’s on fire. Get up! Get up! Get up!'” Steffanie told KFOR.

James is usually not allowed to enter his parents’ room without knocking first, so he was prepared to get yelled at. Luckily, his parents realized why he barged in and acted quickly to get out of the house.

Steffanie is on breathing support and in a wheelchair, so it was up to her son and husband to retrieve the family pets. James collected all the dogs, while her husband Benjamin grabbed the guinea pigs.

The Sittons made it out just in time, right before the apartment was completely engulfed in flames.

The proud parents were emotional when discussing James’ lifesaving actions. Both parents broke down in tears as they embraced their little boy.

“I’m proud to be your mama. I love you so much, and thank you,” Steffanie told her son.
