Amy Hammond knew that she wanted to have a natural birth away from civilization. For the mother, a forest was the most calming and relaxing place she could think of.

Amy appeared on the show Born in the Wild in 2015 to give birth in the woods, hundreds of miles from the nearest hospital.

“Nothing is more relaxing to me than being out in the wild,” Amy said. “If I thought that having my baby out in the woods was in any way dangerous, I wouldn’t have done it.”

The pregnant mother laid on the ground inside of a tent as she gave birth. There were two midwives there for support and a satellite phone in case anything went wrong.

However, some OB-GYNs like Dr. Lisa Masterson warn that parents should be cautious about giving birth so far away from society. Emergencies can happen that require immediate attention, and being hundreds of miles away from the nearest hospital can put both mother and child at risk.

“Things can go wrong, and when they go wrong in obstetrics, they can go very, very wrong very, very fast,” Dr. Masterson said.

Luckily, Amy’s son was born healthy and happy at 7 lbs., 6 oz. Amy named him Levi Silas Hammond.
