Three years ago, Sammy Hodgett was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia after his family found a lump on his neck. The little boy credits the music of his hero, Blake Shelton, for getting him through such a rough time.
While Sammy was in a medically induced coma, his family played “Boys ‘Round Here” by the country star and The Voice coach.
“I just like his voice and how he sings,” Sammy told WQAD Quad Cities in November 2017. What overwhelmed his mom, Becky, was that Sammy recognized the song during his recovery.
Since then, they have been praying and wishing that Sammy would be able to meet his hero. Blake ended up hearing about his story and sent a tweet out in December 2017, saying he can’t wait to meet the little boy — and the singer didn’t disappoint!
Finally, on February 23, 2018, Sammy’s wish came true. “It’s amazing and it’s unbelievable, like, you don’t really think something like that’s gonna happen,” Becky said.
As you’ll see in the video below, Blake called out the little boy by name once he walked into the room, and Sammy lit up! He even brought the country singer a special shirt that has his favorite lyrics.
“I’m wearing this tonight after the show, for sure,” Blake told Sammy.
