On October 21, 2017, 18-year-old Kayla Hayes met her ex-boyfriend at a local car park to discuss their troubled relationship.
He’d displayed abusive behavior before, but he knew how to manipulate her. She could never muster the courage to leave him for good.
But on this particular day, Kayla was ready to officially call it quits. Despite his pleas, she refused to take him back — and this time, he knew she meant it.
In a fit of fury, the ex-boyfriend leaned over and completely bit off Kayla’s bottom lip.
“Feeling it tear about halfway,” Kayla wrote on Facebook. “I then just started screaming at the top of my lungs for help and out of fear for my life. He then yanked me out of my own vehicle and slammed the door in my face so he could take off, and run away from what he had just done. Sitting in a puddle of my own blood with the majority of my lip laying on my leg, my whole mouth on fire, confused and terrified, I didn’t know how I could ever show my face again.”
Even after the reconstructive surgeries and over 300 stitches, the isolation, depression, and paranoia persisted. Kayla was living in a constant state of fear, haunted by that nightmarish day and the monster who had turned her life upside down.
For months, Kayla blamed herself for the brutal attack — but she has come to realize it was not her fault. “If I sit down and let this defeat me then he will only get more satisfaction out of what he’s done,” she says.
Recently, this inspiring survivor was given an incredible gift to match her renewed sense of self… the gift of brand-new smile.
