Even though they can be a lot of fun, it’s important to remember that motorcycles can be incredibly dangerous.

Biker Matthew Murray was reminded of that scary fact after he lost control of his motorcycle — and plummeted 250 feet.

Matthew was riding his bike through the Santa Monica Mountains, in Calabasas, California. He was working his way down a winding road when he completely lost control.

Matthew says he normally loves taking turns and steering his bike, but something happened at that curve that prevented him from steering properly. Before he knew it, Matthew was plummeting down the side of the mountain. He fell 250 feet before coming to a stop.

Matthew was wearing a GoPro camera on his helmet at the time of the crash, which recorded the scary fall. The footage even includes his heartbreaking cries for help.

Thinking he was going to die, Matthew fought for his life. He managed to drag himself back up the side of the mountain to the road, where he flagged down a passing driver, who called 911.

Matthew’s story is a sobering reminder for bikers. Even skilled bikers can be hurt by an unexpected patch of road or a malfunction of their bike.

Matthew’s friends have started a fundraiser for his medical bills. According to the fundraiser, he has broken his back, shoulder, collarbone, ribs, and punctured both lungs, among others. If you’d like to help, you can donate here.
