Music’s biggest night was packed with some unforgettable moments from the very beginning. The 2019 Grammy Awards were kicked off with some major girl power.
After Camila Cabello’s high-energy performance of “Havana,” Michelle Obama appeared onstage with Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Alicia Keys, and Jennifer Lopez and gave a message filled with meaning and music that oozed girl power.
Alicia Keys proved to be a great pick as host, doing the normal duties while lending her musical talents to the evening’s events. Alicia appeared in the Motown tribute with Jennifer Lopez and Smokey Robinson. Her dual piano performance during the show was one of the most iconic moments of the night, where she gave nods to other important artists past and present.
The Dolly Parton tribute, featuring Dolly herself, had everyone on their feet and dancing. Diana Ross continued on that note of togetherness and celebration as she performed a tribute to herself ahead of her 75th birthday.
Young talent definitely had a major moment, with performances from Chloe x Halle and H.E.R. that brought down the house. H.E.R. later gave an adorable and emotional speech while accepting her award for best R&B album. Cardi B was similarly flustered and excited as she took home best rap album with husband Offset at her side.
Despite having no nominations of her own, Miley Cyrus had a huge night, both as part of the Dolly tribute and for her duet with Shawn Mendes. The newly married artist shows no signs of slowing down in her career.
Discussion of the night would be incomplete without mentioning Lady Gaga’s beautifully haunting performance of “Shallow,” which takes on the Oscars later this month. Check out the major highlights from last night’s show below!
